Michael Smith was educated at Bournemouth School and subsequently read music at Jesus College, Oxford where he was Organ Scholar. He studied the organ with Richard Seal at Salisbury Cathedral and Roger Fisher at Chester Cathedral. Becoming Organist and Choirmaster of Oswestry Parish Church in 1982 he moved to Bridlington Priory as Organist and Master of the Choristers in 1987. Since then the choir has made two recordings under his direction and given a number of radio broadcasts. The choir completed its fourth concert tour of Bad Salzuflen in Germany last summer.

As well as his duties in the Priory Michael is a private music teacher and piano tutor at Stamford Bridge Primary School near York. He has given recitals throughout this country and is extensively involved in the work of the RSCM. He has been made an Associate of the RSCM in recognition of his outstanding work at the Priory.
