ROBERT SHARPE has been Director of Music at York Minster since September 2008, in succession to Philip Moore. He previously held posts at Truro Cathedral, Lichfield Cathedral, St Albans Abbey and Exeter College, Oxford.

His work centres around the daily choral tradition of York Minster with its two treble lines of boys and girls and in addition he performs frequently as an organ soloist and accompanist, having played in many parts of Europe and the USA as well as major venues in the UK. Recordings on the Truro Cathedral organ include Volume X of the Great Cathedral Organs series, and the complete organ music of Paul Spicer – Fanfares and Dances; both are on the Regent label.

He has made numerous recordings with Truro Cathedral choir which have all received critical acclaim. With the choir of York Minster, his Christmas at York recording sold over 1,000 copies in York alone. A recording to mark the 200th anniversary of the birth of S S Wesley and including music by his contemporaries is shortly to be released. His work as Musical Director of Three Spires Singers has included concerts with the Three Spires Orchestra and with the period instrument ensemble, Charivari Agréable. He has formed a partnership with this group more recently at York for the termly Cantata Evensongs featuring a Bach Cantata in place of the anthem. In September 2010, Robert Sharpe takes over the Musical Directorship of York Musical Society.

Sharpe’s teachers include Roger Bryan, the late Nicholas Danby and David Sanger as well as those with whom he has had the privilege of working, most notably Andrew Lumsden, Barry Rose and Paul Spicer.

Robert Sharpe has a keen interest in liturgy and music and the interplay between them, and also in food, interesting wines, real ale, architecture, clocks and furniture. He holds Fellowships of the Royal Society of Arts and the Royal College of Organists and is a member of the Victorian Society and the Wine Society. In 2008, he was made an Honorary Fellow of the Guild of Church Musicians and awarded the 2008 Cornwhylen Cross by the Cornish Gorsedd “for an outstanding contribution to religious music in Cornwall”.
