Born in Newcastle upon Tyne, Michael Smith was educated at Bournemouth School and read music at Jesus College, Oxford where he was Organ Scholar. He studied the organ with Richard Seal at Salisbury Cathedral and Roger Fisher at Chester. Formerly Organist and Choirmaster of Oswestry Parish Church, he was appointed as Organist and Master of the Choristers at Bridlington Priory in 1987. A busy teacher and recitalist, he has also been extensively involved with the RSCM and was recently made an Associate in recognition of his work at the Priory. Still available is the CD of the Priory organ, played by Michael and his illustrious predecessor Raymond Sunderland, which was produced to raise funds for the Organ Restoration Appeal. A CD of the rebuilt organ is planned for the near future.
