David Briggs is known throughout the world as a recitalist of stunning virtuosity. Now based In Boston, Massachusetts he has held positions at Truro and Hereford Cathedrals and at King’s College Cambridge where he was Organ Scholar. He is Organist Emeritus of Gloucester Cathedral where he directed the music for eight years. Whilst there he oversaw the complete rebuilding of the Cathedral organ by Nicholson and directed the Three Choirs Festival. He is much in demand for his organ transcriptions and his latest, that of Mahler’s 6th Symphony, will be premiered in the UK in June of this year. The first British winner of the Tournemire Prize at the St Albans International Improvisation Competition, he also won first prize in the Paisley International Improvisation Competition. He is frequently asked to perform improvisation to silent films such as ‘The Phantom of the Opera’ and ‘The Hunchback of Notre Dame’. As a prolific composer his work ranges from full scale oratorios to works for solo instruments including a setting of the St John Passion for choir, chamber orchestra and soloists. Other compositions include a requiem and transcriptions of Tchaikovsky and Schubert symphonies. His busy schedule involves more than fifty concerts a year and in 2004 he was one of three international recitalists invited to perform at the Royal Albert Hall in London to celebrate the opening of the restored organ. Recent engagements include the National Cathedral in Washington, Notre Dame de Paris, Symphony Hall in Birmingham and in the near future performances at the Royal Albert Hall, the Temple Church and Westminster Abbey in London, King’s College Cambridge and a ‘Battle of the Organs’ with Wayne Marshall in the Bridgewater Hall in Manchester. David Briggs has 25 solo CDs to his credit including his transcription of Mahler’s 5th Symphony , Bach at Gloucester and ‘Organ Spectacular’ a CD recorded on the largest church organ in the world at the First Congregational church in Los Angeles. BBC Music Magazine, which has 60,000 subscribers, commissioned him to record a CD celebrating the French composers Widor and Vierne and was featured on the cover of the Spring 2008 issue of the magazine.
